WALKING M WAYS
Twice this week, the LA TIMES published a captivating (and humbling,) article about my blog. Written by Hailey Branson-Potts, a gifted reporter. Who does thorough homework. Subsequently, I received hundreds of new subscribers. Including many who paid, for whom I am especially grateful. Normally, I try to thank every new paid subscriber, with a personal e-mail. But in this case, I am unable to do so. So let me add, I am most thankful to each of you for being a subscriber. Free or paid. MANY THANKS to ALL. Love, Hans
P.S. I also have begun a podcast. ASK HANS. Wherein I answer questions about life, love, friendship, or whatever’s keeping you up at night. And, if you are so inclined, and want to ask a question, go to askhanspodcast@gmail.com. Thanks.
WALKING MY WAYS. Today is Memorial Day. Which is a solemn Holiday, commemorating the men and women of the United States Military, who died, serving their country. And was established in 1868. But though it centers around the military, many also observe Memorial Day to honor deceased family and friends. Whom we remember with personal reflections and sombre thoughts. And offer flowers and tributes at cemeteries and memorial gardens, throughout the United States.
But Memorial Day also has a brighter side. As it is the unofficial “beginning of Summer.” And a day to enjoy, with family, friends and neighbors. At the beach. Or at play. Or wherever. With barbecues. Picnics. Parades. Sales. Music. And a positive atmosphere throughout. And therefore, the Holiday becomes an oxymoron.
In Carmel, one sees hordes of tourists. Even though the wind is blowing and it’s not all that warm. And lines in front of various coffee houses. With Bruno’s offering a giant barbecue pit and its contents, to anyone who is so interested. And people rambling up and down Ocean Avenue. Walking to and from the beach. Some wearing masks. Some even smoking cigars. Others pulling dogs or the dogs pulling them. Children. Strollers, flags and more. Porta Potties and extra trash bins along Scenic Drive. And swarms of people on the beach. And bumper to bumper traffic to Big Sur.
Monterey has a giant 3 day musical festival, CALI ROOTS. And a live pops concert at Colton Hall, including a barbershop chorus. With popular and patriotic music, honoring our heroes. And blankets, lawn chairs and picnics rampant. And Carmel-by-the-Sea has its traditional Memorial Day Ceremony, in Devendorf Park, with the help of American Legion Post 512. And their open house. And remarks by local dignitaries and Veterans, including Leon Panetta. In short, Memorial Day becomes a giant tapestry of different happenings and emotions. Slanted towards everyone’s individual desires. And wants. Finis.

Thank you for your kind words. And you were right. It was a lovely article and I feel honored to have received it. And finally, I love Dachshunds. Especially if they have my name. Love, Hans
