WALKING MY WAYS
WALKING MY WAYS. For over 34 years, a variety of faith communities have housed a group of homeless men, every night. Always in a different facility, Including All Saints Episcopal Church, Carmel, to which I belong. Called IHELP, an acronym for “Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program,” the men have not missed a night, in all this time. And since I have been involved since its beginning, I know it well. Although some churches and locations have changed, the 501c program has not. And now includes 70 churches, synagogues, temples and missions. And also has a sister program for women. As well as 2 buses, which pick up the 20 - 25 men every afternoon. And the dozen or so women. And then take them to their respective locations.
Recently, it was All Saints’ turn. First, the men arrived with their tatami mats and personal belongings. Before settling in for their main meal. Which we provide, along with lodging, breakfast and lunch. In this case, we offered salami, cheeses, crackers, dips, and refreshments. As well as 2 tables of a superb beef and chicken chili, uniquely and inspirationally cooked. Plus a salad. Corn bread. And Dessert. All served with love. In addition to take out breakfasts and lunches. For the following day. The lunches provided by Carmel’s Presbyterian Church.
The men and women have been vetted and stay with IHELP for a number of months, before finding more permanent housing. And the entire program exists on donations, fund raisers and the Goodwill of the participating communities. On a personal level, I rarely miss the opportunity to be part of this monthly meal. And I welcome the interaction and joy of eating with my fellow cooks and our grateful guests.
And when I finally make it home, I give thanks for having my own roof and bed. As opposed to any alternative. Realizing how very fortunate I am. Every day. Every night. In Every way. Finis.

I believe, Hans, you are a very special human.
Thank you for this story, Hans♥️
